Custom Sender ID

A customized sender ID gives your business control over how your text messages appear on a recipient’s phone. Instead of a random short code or unfamiliar number, your messages can display your company name or brand identifier. That instant recognition helps recipients trust the message, understand who it’s from and respond faster.

With CompleteSMS, using a custom sender ID SMS solution is simple, reliable and designed for real business communication, not promotional spam. We assist with country-specific registration to make it easy to send SMS with a sender ID from your computer, existing tools or integrations, while maintaining the delivery standards businesses depend on.

Brand Your Outgoing SMS Messages

Just like personalizing your SMS communications prompts more customers to open and read messages, so does using custom sender IDs. A personalized message demonstrates a relationship, making the receiver more willing to engage with the message. A custom sender ID also allows for quick recognition by the recipient, enticing them to open and read the message.

Personalized messages show that the sender knows the recipient, while custom sender IDs offer information before even opening the message, so the recipients can see if they know the sender.

SMS Sender ID Advantages

A custom sender ID is a branding opportunity for your SMS messages to have a personalized name or number. Customized sender IDs allow your business to replace the incoming phone number displayed on devices receiving your SMS messages with up to 11 characters (words or abbreviations that are letters or numbers, no special characters) that describe your business—these are also known as alpha headers. For example, you can spell your business name or campaign. Even though this feature is only one-way messaging, meaning the recipients of your SMS cannot reply to those messages, your name is front and center, and will appear in the device‘s list of texts, even when the message is closed.

Alternatives to Custom SMS Sender ID

Sender ID capabilities aren’t available in all countries, including the United States. If your business can’t use customized sender IDs but wants to achieve some of the same benefits, there are a few alternatives that function similarly:

Dedicated Short Codes

dedicated short code is a five- to six-digit number unique to your business. Although they don’t allow customized sender IDs, these numbers are identifiable because only one company uses the number. Your customers can easily save the short code in their phone under your business’s contact, so they know who the messages are from, which can help increase engagement with the text.

However, short codes are expensive and take months to provision. They are only one-way communications, and registration is required.

10dlc

10dlc number, which is short for a 10-digit long code, is a dedicated number message recipients can save in their contacts, making your messages easily identifiable. To further encourage engagement, you can register for 10dlc with a local area code that your message recipients will recognize and be more likely to open.

Recent 10dlc regulations from mobile networks are aimed at reducing spam and ensuring legitimate SMS traffic. Businesses and organizations in the U.S. must register their 10dlc numbers to avoid fines or having their messages filtered.

10dlc or any dedicated number, registration is required. Though 10dlc numbers are the quickest to provision, the least expensive customized number and the only one that offers two-way SMS communications.

Sender ID FAQs

Have a Question?
What Is a Sender ID for Sending SMS?

The sender ID is the phone number or unique name that appears in the “from” field of a text message. You can choose to use your business’s phone number as the sender ID or all or part of your business name (you have up to 11 characters, so you may be limited if your business name is longer).

In most cases you’ll need to register the sender ID before you can start using it with your messages. CompleteSMS makes it easy to register your ID.

Sender ID is only available in select countries and is currently not accepted in the United States and Canada.

How Do You Create a Sender ID?

The easiest way to create a sender ID is to use SMS software like CompleteSMS. You can choose your sender ID, then register it through our service. The rules for registering a sender ID vary by country. CompleteSMS will ensure that your business follows the applicable regulations and procedures for your base of operations.

When choosing your sender ID, pick something that will be instantly recognizable to a recipient. You want a person to glance at your text and understand immediately that it’s from your company. If your business’s name is under 11 characters, that’s your best option for your sender ID.

What Can Not Be Used as a Sender ID?

Some carriers may have restrictions on what you can use as your sender ID. These may vary by country. Generally, it’s best to avoid using spaces or any special characters in your sender ID. If you’re using your business name, use letters only.

Number-only IDs will not be accepted, but you can always sign up for a local dedicated number, it will consistently appear as the caller ID and will become recognizable to the recipient and they can save it to their contacts for future use (they can also send to a dedicated number, with a sender ID you can’t have two-way conversations).

Can Recipients Reply to Messages Sent With a Custom Sender ID?

Custom sender ID SMS is typically one-way. If two-way communication is required, a dedicated number is recommended.

Is Bulk SMS With Sender ID Supported?

Yes. CompleteSMS supports bulk SMS with sender ID and personalization options to help messages feel relevant and intentional.

Does a Sender ID Work Internationally?

Sender ID availability varies by country. If you are sending to a country that doesn’t accommodate sender IDs the sender information will appear as the originating phone number functioning as if you don’t have an alpha header.

Do You Need Technical Expertise to Use a Custom Sender ID?

No. CompleteSMS is designed so businesses can send SMS with a sender ID without hiring a developer.

The only requirement is per country registration of the sender ID. CompleteSMS will guide you through this process with a simple form. It often takes a couple weeks to get IDs approved in the originator’s country.

What if my business name is too long?

You can often use a shortened version of your business name if it clearly relates to your organization, brand, acronym, domain, or trademark.

Are sender IDs case-sensitive?

No, COMPLETESMS is treated the same as CompleteSMS.

Australian Sender ID Registration FAQs

Have a Question?
Do I really need to register my sender ID in Australia?

Yes, as of 1 July 2026, the ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority), a division of the Australian government, requires registration to reduce fraud by spammers and scammers.

If a sender ID is not registered it will appear as “UNVERIFIED” in your recipient’s caller ID, and will likely be filed with spam or junk messages. Causing important messages to go unread.

We wrote a blog post where you can learn more about the Australian Sender ID Registration process with the ACMA.

Do I register my Australian sender ID through ACMA directly?

No, you must begin your registrations through your A2P SMS provider, like CompleteSMS. They will do their part, then will direct you on next steps with ACMA.

Who needs to register their sender ID in Australia?

Any business or company that want to use a custom sender ID to be recognized when sending text messages to recipients.

Do I need an ABN to register a sender ID in Australia?

Yes, it most cases you’ll need to have your ABN information including updated authorized business representatives listed on your account.

If you are an international company trying to send into Australia or if you are a non-ABN entity, contact support for additional assistance, these requests are reviewed and dealt with individually on a case by case business.

Do I need a myID login to complete the registration?

Yes, you (an authorized representative of the company) will need to have a strong myID account to complete the registration process.

How long does the registration process take?

Depending on how accurate the information you provide is, will determine the timeframe. But expect to have to wait anywhere from 2 days to 2 months.

When do existing sender IDs need to be registered?

The sooner the better. 1 July 2026 is the official date for unregistered accounts to be marked as “UNVERIFIED” and it can take a few weeks to get the approvals.

Will an unregistered sender ID affect the message delivery?

The message will still be delivered to the mobile device, but the open rate will likely decline. The “UNVERIFIED” label, can cause it to be flagged or grouped with other unverified companies or spam, causing important messages to be missed. If you don’t recognize the sender do YOU open their text?

Will registered sender IDs reduce spam?

That’s the goal. If people can’t pretend to be “Your Bank” or “Mom” hopefully less Australian dollars will end up in scammers and spammers hands.
